The chances are that you’re a creative genius making stunningly attractive items which you hope to sell online, yet for some reason no matter what you do it seems like nobody buys your stuff. The fact is that the large majority of sellers online struggle to make consistent sales, yet the solution to their problem (And Yours!) is actually pretty simple. So here are the 5 Simple Steps For Exploding Your Etsy Sales!
Some of the most creative people I’ve met set up shop and showcase their awesome work on Etsy, hoping to turn their passion into a business. Etsy is a buzzing marketplace filled with amazing products created by some very talented individuals. It provides an excellent platform for people looking to sell their handmade crafts online and generates a huge amount of traffic and sales. However most sellers struggle to make regular sales and generate the revenue they would like for a couple of reasons.
Are you getting out there?
Far too many sellers I talk to don’t market as much as they should. Although Etsy itself can provide a huge amount of traffic to your store from its users, you need to be proactive in marketing your own products consistently. You need to get your products out there and noticed by people who might be interested in them.
If you are not marketing your products I can certainly guarantee that many of your competitors are, and they are making more sales than you. Marketing is NOT rocket science.
In fact it is dead simple and follows some basic patterns.
Step #1 Find out who your buyers are.
You really do need to figure out who exactly is interested to make you efforts worthwhile (Click here to read a post all about this)
This information is key to your success and it makes your marketing so much simpler.
Note: Different products can have different target markets- That’s fine! You might make a piece of Jewelry that would appeal to teenagers and market that to them, whilst another piece is targeted at young mothers. However the more target markets you target….the harder it gets!
Step #2 Find out where your buyers are.
So where do your customers hang out?
Are they on specific forums? If so what are they?
Do they read specific blogs? If so do those blogs allow you to guest post? Do they sell advertising space? Do they offer product reviews?
Can you find them on Twitter/Facebook/Linkedin? Are they in groups or do they follow particular people?
Action Tip: On Twitter- Find one or two key people who are also in your target market and follow the people who follow them!
Step #3 How are you going to stand out?
Blending in with the crowd is awesome…if you are being hunted by a pack of rabid dogs, it prevents you from being eaten or killed.
When you are marketing blending in is your worst enemy!
When there are millions of products on Etsy you need to stand out from your competitors otherwise they may be the ones getting the sale.
So what makes you different?
Is your product better/nicer?
Is your product exclusive or a one of a kind?
Do you make premium products of awesome quality?
Do you provide excellent customer service?
Are you products eco friendly?
Find a way that makes you stand out from the crowd! The more you stand out the more you get noticed and if you are remarkably different from your competitors you are more likely to be a success!
Hint: What makes marketing dodo stand out? I try and give you the simplest, most actionable and valuable information I can so that you can do something about your business today (That’s the aim!) Plus nobody has the coolest dodo on earth on his side!
Action Tip: Find out what your competitors are doing and see how you are going to stand out. Do some research and find out what they are doing and see how you can stand out and be remarkably different.
Step #4 Whats the message?
You have your target market, you know where they hang out and you know what makes you stand out.
If the first thing you then go and do is spam your Etsy link every 30 seconds you will not be doing very well! (In fact you will be killing your business!)
Yet this is what I commonly see…
On Twitter, Facebook and forums it is self promotion after self promotion.
Stop and ask yourself what these people are doing on these sites? Are they sitting there waiting for you to spam them with your link?
The harsh reality is that they are not, and they won’t take kindly to you doing so either.
So get your message right!
Start building relationships.
In forums and groups start joining in and contributing to conversations going on in those places. Put your store link on your signature, but don’t spam it around.
On Twitter and Facebook post relevant content that your target market will enjoy with the occasional link to your store. If people are interested they will visit your store, but if you try to sell them stuff every minute of the day they will run for the hills!
So plan what marketing messages you are going to be sending out and ask yourselves…would I like to be subjected to this everyday?
Action Tip: This is where having your own self hosted blog (Like this site!) is AWESOME, because you can post regular content and turn it into a hub for these people to visit regularly.
Step #5 Deliver the message.
Whether you are marketing on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, a forum or a blog post get marketing!
Go and tell your target market what you want them to know in the places they hang out! If you don’t get out there nobody will do it for you.
Have a plan and be consistent. Make sure you are doing something everyday to drive your business forward and get your message out there.
Tweet every day, Post on Facebook every day, Answer to forum posts every day…
Action Tip: Set daily targets such as- Follow 5 people a day on twitter, Tweet 5 times a day etc etc
So there you have it! The 5 simple steps that every Etsy Seller needs to drive sales through the roof!
But they are useless unless you take some sort of action! So here is a quick summary:
#1- Find out your target market (Spy on competitors if needed!)
#2- Find our where they hang out (Hijack competitor follows on twitter for awesome results)
#3- Find out what makes you stand out (Be Remarkably Different!)
#4- Find out what your message is (Be nice, Don’t Spam!)
#5- GET MARKETING!
